I have to tell you about a beautiful tradition that my children's school holds every year. We attended a Private school for children K4-12 grade. (1996-2006) It was truly a wonderful experience having all the ages together and the school was really great having projects where the older children served as role models for the younger ones.
As a senior, at the beginning of the year, you were given the name of a 1st grade child. All year long both children would encourage each other in different ways. There would be visits on the play yard, treats left in lockers, and sometimes visits after school. It was really an incredible experience for both the 1st grader and the senior.
At Christmas, we would hold a very elaborate presentation service where each senior would decorate a small Christmas tree especially for their 1st grader. Parents, grandparents and the whole school would attend. We would sing Christmas carols, have lots of fun and then we would all sit and wait patiently for the main event..... The presentation of the Christmas Trees. On one side of the aisle the Seniors would walk down with their Christmas Trees (some of the girls swaying with the weight of the ornaments) and on the other side of the aisle, the 1st graders. In the middle they would meet, one by one, on the beautifully decorated platform. And then it happened, the wide smile, the glistening eyes of the 1st grader ....... And you knew that the heart of the Senior just melted. What a wonderful time. If you didn't' shed a tear of joy at this event...... well it's really hard not too!
